Operated by a splinter (but authorized) group of the Ta Rola Colony, the Totally Legitimate Starship Design and Repair Shop is in reality two shops – the front organization that does indeed engage in legitimate starship design and repair services, and the secret black-market mod ring that works right under the noses of the station authorities.
"The Shop" as it is known is well-regarded as an excellent repair and maintenance service at the Sirius Trade Station. Their rates are fair, though not so low that people get suspicious of how they remain in business. The Shop’s other face, however, is in the world of starship modding. While not all the modding business they do is illegal, a fair portion of it involves things that are either a legal grey area (voiding starship warranties to perform unauthorized repairs), ignored by regulations (integrating experimental hardware), or outright illegal (installing black market weapons systems). Some of their modding services are offered through their legal face, such as engine performance increases. Additionally, they provide starship design services on a custom-request basis, building one-of-a-kind ships for anyone who can afford the rates.

Master Engineer – While prodigies in their own right, the Ta that run the Shop often relies upon and welcome the input of their most skilled engineers in any project. These rare and cherished few become close confidantes to the mysterious heads even in matters that transcend the ordinary order of business. Those precious few who achieve this level of trust within the organization are often themselves simply an extension of the heads’ own supervisory authority. One does not win the heads’ favor to this extent easily, however. The Shop’s Master Engineers are often experts in many fields, consummate craftsmen who can perform any task relating to mechanics or computers, from incorporating alien technology into a starship design to designing and building AI to drafting the plans for new or unique weapon designs. |
