Spirits

Spirits are sub-sentient (for the most part) beings of pure energy.  While the debate continues to rage over whether they are a natural component of Earth’s ecosystem, incorporeal aliens intent on subverting humanity, the souls of dead ancestors, or if they are even intelligent at all, the important thing is what they can do.  For the most part, spirits are focused on a particular form of energy or state of matter, primarily focused around the four classical elements.  Why they focus on the four classical elements is unknown, but discussions with sentient spirits have lead the arcane community to usually go with the theory that either the spirit has an innate nature lending itself to the manipulation of that element, or that spirits in general find matter in those forms easiest to manipulate.  Hybrid spirits exist, covering other forms of matter, such as ices, magmas, and metals.  There are also two known Fundamental Force spirit types, covering Gravity and Electromagnetism.  By extension, it is theorized that there are also spirits that can manipulate the Strong and Weak nuclear forces, and there is growing acceptance of the idea that the Esoteric spirits currently associated with Destruction may actually be Strong Force spirits.  No evidence exists for a spirit that can manipulate the Weak nuclear force, but it is still theorized to exist.  Esoteric spirits are still a mystery, since they are few and far between, and don’t deal with physical things like the other spirits do (except for maybe the Destruction spirits).  They may actually be a totally different existence than the other spirits, and might be something such as accumulated mental energy, instead of physical energy.  Regardless, they can still make their presence felt in the physical realm by manipulating people, animals, and plants.  And then there’s the Destruction spirit, which basically just blows things up.  It is theorized that the missing spirits from human knowledge, assuming there are actually 36 different varieties, fall into the Esoteric variety, with possibly a few in Fundamental Force – assuming the scientists are right and that there is more mystery to the universe than we currently know.

Each spirit type has a specific True Incantation linked to it, though they are not all known by the current community.

ADVANCED SPIRITS

Certain spirits, due to unknown reasons, eventually reach full sentience.  Sentient spirits are no longer bound by their type, and can develop aspects of esoteric spirits.  Therefore, you could have a sentient Air spirit with aspects of Mankind, but you cannot have a sentient Protection spirit with aspects of Earth.  Sentient spirits have INT, WIS, and CHA scores, but no STR, DEX, or CON since they are essentially energy.  It is unknown how to destroy a sentient spirit, since they just reform out of their constituent energy.
