“in tempore usque ad tempus” – motto (“up in time, down in time” [Latin])
The Combat Engineer Corps are there own separate entity within the TAAF. The CEC not only maintains their own command structure, but also their own space fleet (albeit a small one) and logistics department to fulfill the unique needs of its nanite-equipped forces. They comprise entirely of Combat Engineers, from their command down to their logistics line.
The Combat Engineers are the group called in when something needs to be built in a hurry, fixed in a hurry, or blown up. All are equipped with Full-Scale Nanite Materializer Systems, and are partnered with Class V AIs.
Rank and file CEC Squads consist of 7 Engineers, comprising 1 Squad Leader, 2 Engineers, and 4 Corpsman.
ORIGINS
The CEC as an organization originated as combat-trained personnel assigned to Project Janus during the Project’s runtime. These personnel were highly skilled engineers and scientists who had pre-existing combat training or showed potential to excel in that field, and were given special training and dispensation to act to defend the Project Janus facilities from the repeated attacks they suffered. The CEC as an idea are far older than that, dating back to Russian experimental troopers during World War Three. Under the direction of now-General Suslovich, the Russian Federation experimented with deploying engineers equipped with nanotechnology hardware to allow for rapid repair and manufacture in the field. These early forays into nanite-equipped soldiers were clumsy at best, and saw little use on the front lines of the war. Following the war, with the continued developments into nanotechnology and universal constructors that resulted as part of Project Janus, General Suslovich and these original CEC members worked to integrate these advances in technology into a set of cybernetic implants and interface systems. These allowed the CEC members to do both functions of their job – engineering and defense – without having to wear bulky armor all day at their workplaces. When inertial manipulation technology reached an experimental stage, the CEC leapt at the chance to integrate this new tech into their arsenal as well. In 2020, the CEC was formally founded as a separate branch of the TAAF. General Suslovich (now actually an official TAAF General, previously that was his rank within the Russian Federation armed forces) turned down command of the Corps, stating that he would be better utilized as an actual soldier, not a bureaucrat. Following his example, no other CEC member who was offered the role of Joint Chief of the CEC accepted the job – instead they resolved to simply guarantee that one O-7 ranked member of the CEC would be present at Tycho at all times.
CEC Command (CECCom)
CEC Command oversees the operations of all other Commands, as well as personnel, readiness, and strategic planning.
CEC Command is located on Erath’s moon, at Tycho Base. The CEC is led by a council of the CEC Generals, most of whom are deployed abroad, but one is always stationed at Tycho Base. They typically rotate out in one year shifts. The General on duty at Tycho represents the Corps as a member of the Joint Chiefs on the Council of Ten.
