“pro navigantibus stellae enim humanitas” – motto (“sailing the stars for humanity” [Latin])
Admiral of the Navy – Kavi Patil
The Terran Alliance Navy comprises almost all military space-faring vessels, with the notable exceptions of Iwo Jima-Class Mobile Marine Bases (which fall under Marine Corps jurisdiction, although they are operated by Naval crewmembers), Army Dropships and Shuttles (which fall under Terran Army jurisdiction), Military Cargo Vessels (which fall under Army jurisdiction), and Military Couriers (which fall under the jurisdiction of TAPS). In addition, each branch of the TAAF also has other craft which are under their own jurisdiction, but these are primarily runabouts and similar craft.
For the most part, a vessel of frigate size or above has crew from a single nation or WW3 faction, with the notable exceptions being Phoenix-Class Command Ships and Iwo Jima-Class Mobile Marine Bases. This is due mainly to ease of internal communications, as well as lingering anxieties – old rivalries die hard.
The Navy is both one of the primary offensive arms of the TAAF, and the transportation for the rest of the forces. Based out of the Terran Alliance Headquarters outside of the Tycho Colony like the rest of the armed forces, their only presence there is the office of the Admiral of the Navy and some administration offices. The “meat” of the Navy, the non-deployed command structure, training facilities, and so on are located elsewhere. Naval Command is located on Gagarin Station, a mobile orbital base normally located in Lunar Orbit. The Naval Academy is on Mars, located at various installations on the Martian surface and in orbital installations as well.
Due to the wide nature of its duties, the Navy has the largest number of personnel out of all the service branches. Navy Admirals are responsible for the command of an entire battle group. Admirals answer directly to the Admiral of the Navy, and by extension, the Joint Chiefs as a whole. O-7 members of the Navy are known as either Vice-Admirals (when serving under an Admiral as the leadership of the naval component of a Combined Fleet) or Fleet Captains (when serving as the commander of a Naval-only battle group).
ACTIVE FLEETS
Battle Group 00 [Earth] “The Duchess’s Guard”
Motto: “pro terrae lunquae” (“for Earth and Luna” [Latin])
Commander: Fleet Captain Dana Kadlec
Flagship: [RFRF07] T.A.S.S. Gofannon (NVY-101), Modified Repairer-class Fleet Resupply Frigate
Battle Group 00 is permanently stationed in the Earth/Luna system, patrolling the homeworld and Luna as a security presence. They commonly find themselves roped into political situations on Earth, and have been utilized to provide numerous ‘displays of force’ to bring dissidents into line. The Duchess’s Guard is regarded as the ‘most by the book’ of the Battle Groups and Combined Fleets, since the close proximity to Joint Fleet Command and the Admiral of the Navy leaves Fleet Captain Kadlec with little room to customize her operatoins. The main distinguishing element of The Duchess’s Guard is their complete focus on “small” ships – Battle Group 00 contains no capital-scale vessels. The reasoning for this is that the Earth/Luna system is ‘too crowded’ to allow for a capital-scale vessel to maneuver and operate effectively, plus capital-scale weaponry poses heavy dangers to civilian and corporate installations in the area.
Battle Group 01 [Mars] “The Crimson Shield”
Motto: “defendere lana mundi” (“defending the crimson world” [Latin])
Commander: Fleet Captain Hedwyn Reece
Flagship: [CB02] T.A.S.S. Cerberus (NVY-177), Conqueror-class Battlecruiser
Battle Group 01 is permanently stationed in the Martian system. It was regarded as one of the most dull and mind-numbing assignments until the ‘Martian Ecoterrorism’ wave started in 2027. Battle Group 01 is commonly utilized to strike ecoterrorist locations when they are found on Mars (if they are found outside of a colony’s jurisdiction). Fleet Captain Reece relishes the new challenge of the ecoterrorists to the point where it would be suspicious if it wasn’t for his service record. possibly a bit too much. The Crimson Shield takes full advantage of the vast unpopulated expanses Mars to practice ground operations far more than any other active Battle Group or Combined Fleet, making them the most highly-skilled part of the Navy in ground combat.
Battle Group 02 [Outer Sol] “Defenders of the Giants”
Motto: “guzo vigil n’etiti ndị Refeyim” (“standing vigil among the giants” [Igbo])
Commander: Fleet Captain Chiamaka Ihejirika
Flagship: [LB00] T.A.S.S. Lagos (NVY-083), Lagos-class Battlecruiser
Battle Group 02 is divided into five smaller Flights, one for each of the other planets. Originally there were only four Flights, but in the wake of the Battle of Pluto a fifth Flight was formed to guard that planet. Originally the Group was a single roaming fleet, but after wargames in 2028 this was deemed to be ineffective by Joint Fleet Command. Fleet Captain Iherjirika works closely with the Teuthidoid Flotilla stationed at Jupiter, and since assuming command in late 2029 she has done an excellent job in maintaining a policy of deferring to the Teuthidoids in all matters regarding the Jovian system.
Battle Group 03 [Sol Mobile 1] – “Sol’s Eyes”
Motto: “mottoy stuff goes here” (“translation goes here” [Language])
Commander: Fleet Captain Kayode Afolayan
Flagship: [XX##] T.A.S.S. Name (NVY-XXX), Lagos-class ShipType
Battle Group 04 [Sol Mobile 2] – “Sol’s Ears”
Motto: “mottoy stuff goes here” (“translation goes here” [Language])
Commander: Fleet Captain Jahan Attar
Flagship: [XX##] T.A.S.S. Name (NVY-XXX), Lagos-class ShipType
Battle Group 05 [Alpha Colony] – “Prime Guardians”
Motto: “mottoy stuff goes here” (“translation goes here” [Language])
Commander: Fleet Captain Jin Han
Flagship: [CB01] T.A.S.S. Zhengnan (NVY-177), Conqueror-class Battlecruiser
Battle Group 06 [Mobile Centauri System] – “Centauri Sentinels”
Motto: “mottoy stuff goes here” (“translation goes here” [Language])
Commander: Fleet Captain Afrim Baris
Flagship: [XX##] T.A.S.S. Name (NVY-XXX), Lagos-class ShipType
Battle Group 07 [Roaming 1 [TYPICAL: Centauri-Sol Run]] – “Guardians of Trade”
Motto: “mottoy stuff goes here” (“translation goes here” [Language])
Commander: Fleet Captain Xanti Loyola
Flagship: [XX##] T.A.S.S. Name (NVY-XXX), Lagos-class ShipType
Battle Group 08 [Roaming 2 [TYPICAL: Northern Fringe]] – “Northern Watchers”
Motto: “mottoy stuff goes here” (“translation goes here” [Language])
Commander: Fleet Captain Sahak Barsamian
Flagship: [XX##] T.A.S.S. Name (NVY-XXX), Lagos-class ShipType
Battle Group 09 [Roaming 3 [TYPICAL: Southern Fringe]] – “Southern Listeners”
Motto: “mottoy stuff goes here” (“translation goes here” [Language])
Commander: Fleet Captain Ratree Metharom
Flagship: [XX##] T.A.S.S. Name (NVY-XXX), Lagos-class ShipType
Battle Group 10 [Roaming 4 [TYPICAL: Eastern Fringe]] – “Eastern Guard”
Motto: “mottoy stuff goes here” (“translation goes here” [Language])

Flagship: [PC03] T.A.S.S. F (NVY-600), Phoenix-class Command Ship
Survey Command (SurCom)
Head: Admiral Roslyn Patton
Headquarters: Canberra, Australia
Exploratory Command (ExploraCom)
Exploratory Command is responsible for the mapping of known space and exploration of unknown space. It comprises Mapping Command (MapCom) and Scout Command (ScoutCom). ExploraCom also has close ties to Military Intelligence, in the Administration branch, as well as Stellar Cartography, as it receives the reports from those Captains and officers who have come into contact with anything of note. ExploraCom also has close relations with the corporations and the Terran Alliance Ministry of Commerce, as it is this section that maps new FTL routes and secures new trading lines. ExploraCom is based in Canberra, Australia, on Earth.
ExploraCom is headed by Vice Admiral Sidonie Fontaine
- Mapping Command (MapCom):
- Scout Command (ScoutCom):
Spacewatch (SpaceCom)
Spacewatch is the network of listening posts, long-range probes, telescopes, and other data gathering systems that are the TAAF’s electronic eyes and ears. Spacewatch actually dates back to early efforts to detect Earth-crossing asteroids in the 21st century, but has evolved to become an important part of naval intelligence. It still has a scientific mission, but these days SpaceCom is as likely to be looking for alien warships as it is to be searching the heavens for dead pulsars or cosmic rays. SpaceCom is based in the Tsiolkovskiy Colony on Luna, and has facilities all over the Sol system.
SpaceCom is headed by Vice Admiral Magnus Ottosen
Stellar Cartography (StelCart)
StelCart works to map planetary systems and asteroid belts, as well as map the overall structure of space in coordination with ExploraCom. Topographical maps are made by the Army’s Ordnance Survey section, which works closely with StelCart, but anything above the atmosphere falls into StelCart’s sphere of interest. The Stellar Cartography section is based on Gagarin Station.
StelCart is headed by Vice Admiral Ichabod Frost
Naval Operations Command (NavCom)
Head:
Headquarters:
Fleet Readiness Assessment (FRAss)
Fleet Readiness assesses the ability and combat readiness of the Navy. It runs wargames, test officers, runs simulations of battles and studies past engagements. FRAss is the ultimate determiner – apart from the battlefield itself, of course – of how effective the Terran Navy is. FRAss receives regular updates on enemy forces from Military Intelligence and adapts Navy tactics and deployments to compensate, as well as advising the Fleet Technologies and Requirements Group.
Strategic Planning Office (NavStratPlan)
The Naval Strategic Planning Office translates long-term projections of conflicts and developing situations into fleet movements. The vast distances and long travel times, as well as the lack of dedicated FTL communications involved in interstellar war require careful planning. NavStratPlan works alongside Joint Fleet Operations.
Naval Personnel (NavPers)
Head:
Headquarters: Terran Alliance Headquarters, Tycho Colony, Luna
The Personnel Office, based at Tycho, administers Naval personnel of all ranks and assignments.
Naval Medical Command (NavMed)
Head:
Headquarters:
Navy Medical Command reports to the Surgeon General’s Office, but specializes in the medlab facilities on ships and satellite bases, as well as the treatment of space-related injuries and maladies, notably radiation burns, zero-gravity bone wastage, high-gravity skeletal stresses and so on.
Fleet Technologies (FTech)
Head:
Headquarters:
This catchall department covers specialized research and design for Naval vessels and bases. It works closely with the various military corporations and Military Research and Development in sourcing and developing new classes of ship. Fleet Technologies also provides updated technical briefings and training, and has the final call on the deployment of new technologies and weapons to the field.
Fleet Technology Testing and Evaluation Group (EffTEG)
The awkwardly named EffTEG are the test pilots of the Navy, working with experimental weapons and prototypes. They have several test hulls available to them – mistreated frigates that have had their weapons torn out and replaced dozens of times. EffTEG evaluates new designs from the various corporations and tests the integration of new weapons systems into existing designs.
Advanced Vessel Handling School (AVHS)
The Advanced Vessel Handling School is an interesting place. You have advanced military hardware, rampaging egos and passions, vast amounts of cash (even just the next generation of starfighter is worth billions of credits to weapons manufacturers) and combat all within a relatively confined area. AVHS is one part technology evaluator, one part research lab, one part school, and one part fight club. It simultaneously trains pilots, does advanced training for veteran pilots, and evaluates new hardware in conjunction with EffTEG.
Naval Security (NavSec)
Head:
Headquarters:
Naval Security trains and oversees all security forces for Navy vessels and installations, and is more specialized than Internal Affairs. Training for NavSec focuses primarily on corridor fighting and defense against boarding operations. NavSec also offers advanced training for NavSec Troopers which are going to be assigned to long-duration patrols, particularly those that spend a lot of time away from the Sol system. This training allows its recipients to function as a police and detective force in addition to standard security.
Naval Base Operational (NavBO)
Head:
Headquarters:
Naval Base Operations controls all of the Navy’s space stations and some planetside bases such as spaceports, landing fields, proving grounds, observation posts and so on. Most of these orbital assets are built on the same chassis as Gagarin Station, but there are exceptions to this. The facility in the Jovian system is of Teuthidoid design, and the new facility orbiting Proxima Centauri c is of Proximan design, however both of these facilties have been revamped for human biologies.
NavBO also oversees all space-based planetary and colonial defenses, such as the New York, Normandy, and Unity classes of Orbital Weapons Installations, Vigilant-class defense satellites, and other similar technologies.
Base Maintenance (NavBaMaint)
This technical group maintains all systems on board TAAF naval bases. Base maintenance is generally looked down on by the other technical sections, being dismissed as the equivalent of ‘janitorial work’, compared to the more glamorous and challenging duties of damage control onboard a fighting ship or being on the cutting edge of technology at the shipyards.
Base Defense (NavBaDef)
Satellite bases can mount much larger weapons, such as missile racks and heavy railguns. Even larger installations like Gagarin Station can also carry heavier armor, as their great mass does not need to be moved from place to place on a regular basis. The normal tactics for taking starbases, then, shy away from direct assault and focus on boarding actions or siege warfare. Base Defense officers are trained in repelling boarders and running blockades.
All stations have at least one squadron of Interceptors attached to it, under the command of Base Defense.
Fleet Operations (FleetOps)
Head:
Headquarters: Gagarin Station, Lunar Orbit
FleetOps oversees the day-to-day coordination and operations of the 11 Naval Battle Groups. The three planned Combined Fleets are overseen by Joint Fleet Operations under the Administrative branch.
Training Command (NavTraCom)
Head: Admiral Carina Croft
Headquarters:
Navy Technical Academy (NTA)
Located at Grissom Station, a tethered orbital facility in aerosynchronous orbit above the Martian equator, the Navy Technical Academy trains both enlisted and career personnel in whatever technical field they are best suited for. Specializations include:
- Avionics
- Communications
- Computer Systems (which involves ShipOS training)
- Damage Control
- Higgs Drive Systems
- Large Craft Operations
- Life Support
- Power Systems
- Sensor Systems
- Small Craft Operations
- Sublight Engines (SKK Drives and other technologies)
- Weapons
Enlisted personnel sign up for a three, six, or nine-year period of duty. Training courses at the NTA lasts one year, with an additional year of on-duty training. Technicians are trained to the highest standards, and these skills are transferable to the civilian sector. The TAAF gives extra benefits to those who sign on for longer periods. Note that final decisions on where a new recruit goes are made at the RecCom level (which is part of Administration), so a citizen who signs up in hopes of seeing the galaxy on board a scout vessel might find himself carrying freight with TAPS or lifting boxes with the Army.
Officer Training Academy (OTA)
The OTA trains the next generation of officers for the Navy. Training takes three years (one of which is spent at the NTA as with enlisted personnel), plus a probationary year in the cadet fleet. Cadets are trained in leadership, tactics, history and diplomacy as well as a chosen technical field (chosen from the same list of specializations available at the NTA). Officers must serve for at least nine years; most are in the Navy for life.
Unlike the NTA, OTA does not have a designated training facility, and training is done at a variety of installations throughout the Terran Alliance. Training sometimes takes place at the Unified Officer Training Academy at the Tycho Colony.
OTA is headed up by Vice Admiral Ueno Ayumi.
Cadet Fleet
The Cadet Fleet is made up of the ships attached to Training Command. Most of NavTraCom’s ships are first-production-run frigates dating back to the earliest days of the fleet, although it does have several runabouts, and a single torpedo cruiser (which is used for all large ship training), the George C Marshall.
Pilot Training Academy (PTA)
The PTA is where any enlisted soldier or officer goes to learn Small Craft Operations or Large Craft Operations. The PTA is based in Mars orbit, and trains pilots for everything from fighters all the way up to cruisers and larger.
