Background
Why did you join the Terran Alliance Armed Forces? Some families have a long tradition of military service, dating back decades or even centuries, so joining a unified Earth military just seemed like the right thing to do to carry on the tradition. Other soldiers joined against the wishes of their family, to see the sights, or because it was the only career open to them.
Roll | Background |
1-2 | Anti-Military: The character’s family is opposed to the military for some reason, and joining it caused a rift that has gone unhealed. |
3-4 | Second Chance: The character joined the military to escape an unhappy or painful life, a criminal past, or some other tragedy. |
5-8 | Career: The character joined up because of the training and salary offered by a military career. |
9-12 | Curiosity: The character wants to see the sights. |
13-14 | Veteran: The character was a member of his home nation’s armed forces prior to (or joined during) World War Three. They might have continued their service after the war by joining the TAAF, but more likely they left re-enlisted at some later point. |
15-18 | Patriotism: The character joined to defend and serve the Terran Alliance. |
19-20 | A Tradition of Service: The character’s family has a long tradition of serving in the military, and they might have several relatives in positions throughout the armed forces. You gain Military Man as a bonus feat. |
Training
After rolling (or choosing) a character’s background, select the year that the character joined the armed forces and started training. For officers, roll on the Training Events table four times. For enlisted personnel, roll twice. If an enlisted character returns for officer training at a later date in their history, roll twice more. Keep in mind that the CEC and TAPS service branches are officer only, so they require a total of four years of training. If a character has undergone military training previously, such as by being part of a nation’s military, they do not need to repeat the same training when they join the TAAF.
CEC members who joined or transferred into the CEC in 2020, 2021, or 2022 still undergo training, but it is considered “on the job.” As such, these members roll on BOTH the training tables and the year tables for 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023.
Roll | Training |
1-10 | No Event |
11-13 | Contact: The character makes a new friend or contact. Roll on the Contact table. |
14-15 | Noted Accomplishment: The character excels in some field of study. +1 Promotion Point |
16 | Life Event: Roll on the Life Events table. |
17 | Unusual Event: Roll on the Unusual Event table. |
18 | Significant Accomplishment: The character breaks some record set by previous classes during training. +2 Promotion Points. |
19 | Disgrace: The character screws up, big time. They do not fail training, but must repeat the year and lose 2 promotion points. This does not disqualify you from the Top Kick feat. Roll on this table one additional time. |
20 | Injury: The character is injured during training by some accident, such as an equipment failure, crash, or the accidental use of live weapons. Roll on the Injury table. |
Life Events
These are events in the character’s life that are not necessarily related to their career, but do have an effect on the character. ONLY ROLL ON THIS TABLE WHEN REQUIRED TO BY A ROLL FOR A GIVEN YEAR.
Roll | Event |
1-2 | Birth or Death – Someone close to the character dies, like a friend or family member. Alternatively, someone close to the character gives birth (or the character themselves gives birth). The character is related in some fashion (father or mother, relative, godparent, and so on). |
3-4 | New Contact – The character gains a new contact. Roll on the Contacts table. |
5-6 | New Relationship – The character becomes involved in a romantic relationship. Roll on the Contacts table for the background of the other party. If you are already in a relationship, you have 3 choices of action. 1) Reroll. 2) End the first relationship and begin a new one. 3) Become a two-timing player and have two (or more) relationships going at once. If you have 2 or more relationships going on at once, you have a chance of losing 1 promotion point each year this continues. The chance equals 25% * (Relationship Count – 1). |
7-8 | Improved Relationship – A romantic relationship involving the character deepens, possibly leading to marriage or some other emotional commitment. If you roll this without having a relationship in place, congratulations, you had a sudden wedding – roll on the contacts table for the background of the other party. |
9-10 | Ending of Relationship – A romantic relationship involving the character ends. Probably badly. If you weren’t in a relationship, reroll. |
11-12 | Betrayal – The character is betrayed in some fashion by a friend. -2 Promotion Points, but this cannot rank you down. |
13-14 | Crime – The character commits or is the victim (or is accused) of a crime. -2 Promotion Points |
15-16 | Good Fortune – Something good happens to the character; he comes into money unexpectedly, has a lifelong dream come true, gets a book published or has some other stroke of good luck. |

19-20 | Unusual Event – Roll on the Unusual Event table. |
Injury
Life in the armed forces can be highly dangerous; wartime and combat bring injuries, but accidents can happen even during peace. ONLY ROLL ON THIS TABLE WHEN REQUIRED TO BY A ROLL FOR A GIVEN YEAR.
Roll | Event |
1-10 | Minor Injury – The character was injured, but recovered quickly. Roll on the Injuries table. |
11-13 | Significant Injury – The character spent months recuperating. If the character was training, they must repeat the year (and roll on the Training table an additional time). Roll on the Injuries table |
14-16 | Significant and Lasting Injury – The character spent months recuperating, as above, but also still shows signs of the injury, like a limp, scars, or possibly psychological damage. Roll on the Injuries table. |
17-18 | Significant Injury, Interesting Year – As Significant Injury, but also roll on the Life Events table. Roll on the Injuries table. |
19-20 | Cybernetics – As Significant Injury, but the character also required cybernetic limbs or organs to replace damaged ones. Roll on the Injuries Requiring Cybernetics table. |
Unusual Events
Sometimes, strange things happen. ONLY ROLL ON THIS TABLE WHEN REQUIRED TO BY A ROLL FOR A GIVEN YEAR.
Roll | Event |
1-5 | Alien Artifact – Humanity certainly wasn’t the first species to take to the stars, and the character has found evidence of this. They come into possession of an alien device of unknown origin. |
6-9 | Spirit Contact – Normally reserved to the realm of mages, the character has an encounter with one of the spirits of the natural world, for better or worse. |
10-14 | Psionic Contact – The character has an encounter with psionics in some fashion, perhaps they are illegally mind-read by a telepath, or maybe they turn out to have untapped psionic potential. Not available prior to 2017, and between 2017 and 2019 the psionics must originate from the Teuthidoids. |
15-20 | Magical Contact – The character has an encounter with magic in some fashion, perhaps they come across a Magical Device, perhaps they witnessed a Mage operating in World War 3, or perhaps they were sent on an operation in support of the SDA. |
Tours of Duty
Calculate the character’s starting rank after training as normal, though characters fresh out of training cannot be higher-ranked than E-3 or O-3, any promotion points that are above the E-3/O-3 requirements are retained and can be used for a higher pay grade, but they do not rank a character up until their next level gain.
Military Occupational Specialties (MOSes)
For every 2 years of service after training, a mundane character (defined as someone without the Mage Talent or NMS implants feats, or Psionics as a trained skill) picks an MOS from the list here. MOSes can be chosen more then once, and unless otherwise noted the bonuses stack (up to +6 for skills, but skill bonuses do not stack with the Skill Focus or [Team] feats). Non-mundane characters do not get these, as they have to spend more time honing their special abilities. If you become non-mundane at a certain point in your background, you gain MOSes up until that point as normal (for example, if your tour of duty began in 2017 and you joined the CEC in 2029, you would gain MOSes as normal from 2017 through 2029).
PROMOTION POINTS OVER TIME
For every four years of service a character goes without a promotion point penalty, they gain 1 promotion point.
